A wood fireplace insert is like a wood stove that has been manufactured to fit within the firebox of an existing masonry fireplace. Wood inserts are an easy and convenient way to convert and old inefficient and polluting wood fireplace, into a highly efficient, extremely clean burning heating system for your home. A wood insert has an efficient firebox surrounded by a steel shell. Rather than heat being released into the masonry structure, a natural convective air current or a fan draws air through the outer steel shell to move hot air a from the room through this shell, and back to your living space. A decorative faceplate covers the space between the insert body and the fireplace opening.
Modern wood inserts have extremely high efficiencies and very low emissions, as compared to older fireplace inserts. The cleanliness of the burn is rated in grams per hour of particle emissions, often as low as 1-3 grams per hour, and burning so clean that there is often little or no visible smoke exiting the chimney. This is achieved by the use of baffles or catalytic converters that divert and burn the gases and particles before they enter the chimney. If you use a wood insert to heat your home, upgrading to a new high efficiency insert, you may use up to 40% less wood for the same heat.
We have several woo inserts on display in our Ottawa and Carleton Place showrooms, where our experts can guide you through the features and benefits of each unit.
