Get your furnace repair or replacement done right with Top Hat.

If you find your home suddenly without heat, there are a few quick things you can check that may fix the immediate problem.
  1.  Ensure your thermostat is set to heating – not cooling or off.
  2. Turn your thermostat up a few degrees to see if your heating system activates.
  3. In the winter, ensure your furnace exhaust vent is not blocked with snow or ice. As a safety precaution, some furnaces
  4. will automatically turn off if vents are blocked.
  5. Check your fuse or circuit breaker, which is in your home’s main electrical panel. If you have fuses, you may need to
  6. replace one. If you have a breaker, try resetting it.
  7. Clean or replace your furnace filter if it’s dirty. Always turn off the power switch before opening your furnace. Close
  8. the furnace access panel before switching it back on.
  9. Ensure that your furnace power switch (similar to a light switch and located near your furnace) is in the “on” position.
  10. If your furnace has a standing or continuously burning pilot light, make sure it’s lit. If your pilot light is out,
  11. follow the instructions on the furnace plate or sticker, or in the manufacturer’s booklet.

Common Furnace Issues

Dirty Ductwork

If you’ve noticed that your furnace isn’t heating your house as effectively as it used to be, your ducts might need cleaning! This job is best left to the professionals, like our team at Top Hat, who have the tools to effectively clean your ducts. To check the airflow, just place your hand on the vent to see how much air is coming out.

Changing Filters

Did you know you should be changing your furnace filters every other month? Most homeowners let this essential chore slip their mind, and that can impact how effective your furnace is.

Malfunctioning Starting Mechanism

Most modern furnaces use electrical ignition, while older furnaces operate on a pilot light. In both, the starting mechanism can fail and need to be fixed or replaced by a professional.

Blower Components

Your furnace’s blower consists of multiple parts, including bearings, a belt, and a capacitor. These components need maintenance and can break, requiring a home care professional to replace them. Your blower controls the power of the air flow throughout your home, and without it, it may be harder for air to reach throughout your house!

Unexpected Noises

Is your furnace making a strangenoise? It could be a sign of a number of different problems that may not be obvious from the outset. Our professionals at Top Hat can diagnose and treat the problem swiftly.

Gas Leaks or Odours

It isn’t unusual for your furnace to have a slight smell at the beginning of the season, but constnat bad smells may be an issue. A mouldy, metallic, or burning smell could mean you need cleaning or are on the verge of a bigger problem.

Flame Sensor

The flame sensor’s job is to ensure the pilot light is still lit and, if it isn’t, to shut off the furnace. If your flame sensor is obstructed or malfunctioning, it may think the pilot light is lit when it isn’t, or that it’s gone out when it hasn’t. Both of those situations can be dangerous, meaning your flame sensor needs cleaning to be able to detect everything properly.

Thermostat

Sometimes your problem isn’t the furnace, it’s the thermostat! Your thermostat detects the temperature in your home, so if it’s malfunctioning, it may not know how hot or cold your home already is. We can examine and repair your thermostat to keep your heating just right.

Circuit Breaker

When a power surge happens, your furnace might trip your circuit breaker. Resetting the system may fix the problem but, if your furnace is regularly tripping your circuit breaker, then our team at Top Hat would be happy to come and fix the problem.
